Stories, music, art and everyday conversations give words a context. Here, we mainly explore Spain. The Spanish-speaking world is much wider and includes distinct countries and cultures, each with voices of their own.
01
One country, many voices
Spain brings together regions with different histories and traditions. Spanish coexists with languages such as Catalan, Galician and Basque. Accents, expressions and ways of communicating invite us to discover the people and places behind the words.
In lessons, we explore expressions and customs in different settings and learn to ask questions with curiosity.

At the table, conversation continues
A meal can become a chance to tell stories, ask questions and spend time together. The word sobremesa opens a conversation about these moments. We explore expressions for inviting someone, talking about food and sharing experiences.
We practise invitations, questions and ways to keep a conversation going.
Flamenco: a living tradition
Song, dance and accompaniment come together in flamenco, inscribed by UNESCO in 2010. Its roots are in Andalusia, with a presence in Murcia and Extremadura and an essential contribution from Roma communities. Its rhythms and expressiveness open conversations about emotion and identity.
We listen, describe feelings and talk about the music we enjoy.
Art offers another way of seeing
Antoni Gaudí’s works introduce us to Catalan Modernisme and the relationship between architecture, nature and craftsmanship. Seven properties associated with his work are inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Their shapes and details invite observation and imagination.
We use colours, shapes and comparisons to describe what we see.
A culture that keeps creating
Why does it matter today?
05
On screen and in conversation
Films and series produced in Spain travel beyond its borders, including through digital platforms. They offer glimpses of humour, language registers and contemporary themes. Latin American cinema brings other perspectives: one language can tell stories from different societies.

In museums and education
Art brings people from different places into conversation. In 2025, 69% of visitors to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao were international, according to the museum. Exhibitions become places for encounters, questions and personal interpretations.
An image or a work of art can begin a conversation in Spanish: what do you notice, and what would you ask?
